Thousands of people every year receive medical devices that are intended to help them improve their functioning and their lives. People may receive these devices after injuries or as the result of disease. Such devices include heart valves, defibrillators, hip implants, and pacemakers. These medical devices and implants are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are supposed to be fully tested before FDA approval and being available to the public.

Even though the FDA approves these devices, some of them include defects or produce severe side effects which cause serious and permanent injuries. Many times, a person who received a defective medical device may need additional surgery to repair or replace the defective device.
