The Choate school, an exclusive and expensive private boarding school in Connecticut has admitted decades of rape and sexual abuse of its students by faculty members. The school’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees issued a written statement apologizing for what he described as “sexual misconduct.”

We believe that the predatory behavior described by former students, and now admitted by trustees and administration officials, is rape and sexual abuse of worst kind. The victims were students living apart from their parents in a closed system and the predators and molesters were teachers and faculty — fully formed adults in positions of power relative to the students who were all younger than 18 years old. When instances of rape and abuse came to light the offenders were let go, some with recommendations, and quietly permitted to obtain new jobs at other schools. The action by teachers and administration officials is much more than simple “sexual misconduct.” It is predatory sex abuse of children who are legally unable to consent to sexual activity.
